「サテライトワークショップ開催報告」

本領域に携わる若手研究者や学生の研鑽と交流を目的としたワークショップが、キックオフシンポジウムと並行して開催されました。このワークショップでは、生命金属分野で著名なProf. Thomas V. O’Halloran (Northwestern Univ.）とProf. Christoph J. Fahrni（Georgia Tech.）をアドバイザーとしてお招きし、博士号取得後１年未満の若手研究者3名と大学院生6名（修士3名、博士3名）が研究発表を行いました。また、参加者がお互いのことを覚えられるように顔写真付きの要旨集も作成しました。使用言語はすべて英語、質疑応答では１人最低１回は質問するという少し厳しいルールを設けましたが、アドバイザーの先生方からの優しいお声がけもあり、和やかな雰囲気の中で頑張ることができました。質疑応答の時間は、何度も手を挙げて質問する大学院生もいて、活発な議論が交わされました。研究対象は、鉄・亜鉛・金ナノ粒子など幅広く、研究手法も多彩であり、参加者たちは本領域の裾野の広さを感じたようでした。このワークショップを皮切りに「生命金属科学 若手の会」を発足できるよう、今後もこのような機会を設けていきたいです。最後に、多忙なスケジュールを割いてご参加いただきましたProfs. A workshop designed to facilitate training and interaction among young researchers and graduate students in the field of integrated bio-metal science was held along with a kick-off symposium. Professor Thomas V. O’Halloran from Northwestern University and Professor Christoph J. Fahrni from Georgia Tech, both of whom are well-known in this field, were invited to serve as advisors. Presentations were given by 3 graduate students, 3 doctoral students, and 3 young researchers who obtained their PhD within the last year. We also put together a book containing each student’s abstract and photograph so that the attendees could remember each other. The rules were somewhat strict; for example, the abstract, presentation, and Q&A all had to be in English, and each attendee was required to ask at least 1 question during the workshop. However, the advisors provided gentle encouragement and in this friendly atmosphere, the attendees were able to do their best. During the Q&A session, many of the attendees raised their hands, asked questions, and participated in a lively discussion. Because the targets of research (e.g., iron, zinc, gold nanoparticles) and the methods used to research them are numerous, the attendees seemed to grasp the enormity of the bio-metal science field. We aim to create further opportunities like this workshop as part of our efforts to launch the “Association of Young researchers on Integrated Bio-metal Science.” Lastly, we would like to express our gratitude to Professors O’Halloran and Fahrni for taking time out their busy schedules to offer their invaluable assistance.
